Procedures for Importing Dogs and Cats (Pets) from Abroad to Vietnam
Pets are animals that are kept for companionship, care, and affection under human supervision. Nowadays, as social life develops, pet ownership has become very popular and attracts significant interest from many people. In Vietnam, the most common pets are primarily dogs and cats, especially imported breeds such as Poodles, Huskies, Corgis, British Shorthairs, Scottish Folds, etc.
So, how can these pet breeds be imported to Vietnam? What documents and information do individuals and businesses in Vietnam need to prepare? Let’s explore these questions with ICAGREEN in this article.
1. Contact the Foreign Partner to Prepare the Necessary Documents
The two types of documents required for importing pets—particularly dogs and cats—into Vietnam are:
Valid Vaccination Certificate: For dogs and cats, a rabies vaccination certificate is mandatory. It must include the following information: microchip number, vaccination date, and the validity period of the vaccination.
Animal Quarantine Certificate: After the animal is examined and certified by a veterinarian, the competent authority of the exporting country will issue a Quarantine Certificate (Health Certificate), accompanied by a livestock health monitoring book.
Additionally, both parties should agree on an airline to ensure the pets’ safety at a reasonable cost.
2. Quarantine Registration and Customs Declaration
When pets arrive in Vietnam by air, individuals or businesses need to carry out the following procedures:
Customs dossier includes:
Bill of Lading (B/L)
Invoice
Packing list
Certificate of Origin (C/O, if available)
Customs declaration
Animal quarantine declaration form, which should include the following information: chip number, place of manufacture, country of export, number of animals, and total weight.
Note: For personal goods, inspection procedures are required.
At the quarantine agency:
The quarantine agency will check the animals, verify the chip number, vaccination record, and health certificate.
If the information is accurate, the importer will be issued a temporary travel certificate to take the pets home for care.
Within 1–3 days, the quarantine agency will issue a final quarantine certificate for the imported animals.
3. Carry Out Customs Clearance Procedures
After obtaining the quarantine certificate, the importer submits it to the customs office to complete the customs clearance procedures for the shipment.
Businesses can either handle the procedures themselves or hire professional transportation service companies to ensure a smooth process and mitigate risks during export or import operations.
